Attitudes of Dieting

By Mariea B. and Emily B. of SPLHS

While some dieting plans can be incredibly beneficial for one's body, others can be just as harmful.  Dieting does not necessarily mean starving one's self, but rather revising their food intake.  It is important that people pay attention to the foods that they consume.  People need a balanced diet made up of acceptable portions in order to be healthy.  When someone misunderstands the idea of dieting, and simply restricts themselves from eating, it can be seriously consequential for their body.  (“The Deal With Diets”).

People diet for a variety of reasons, but most are looking to lose unwanted or unhealthy weight.  Society has perverted the idea of an ideal weight; the general public is bombarded with the idea that being underweight is beautiful and something to strive towards.  Teenagers are specifically targeted by this idea.  This is dangerous because the body experiences changes during the teenage years that influence weight gain.  It is unhealthy for teens to oppose this natural weight gain, but society encourages them to do just that.  In the process of trying to lose this weight, some people develop eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.  If a person actually needs to shed a few pounds it is recommended that they take on an exercise program rather than take on an extreme diet.  ("Should You Be Dieting? The Pros and Cons").

Since dieting can be dangerous, it is important that a person create healthy habits before they jump into a diet.  A person should be accustomed to watching their food intake, and monitoring the carbohydrates they eat.  It is also recommended that a person practice moderation before they start a new diet.  Those seeking to begin a diet need to focus on putting good food into their body as opposed to focusing on restricting certain foods.  Regular exercise is a huge part of a diet plan.  People that wish to lose weight need to consider the exercise they get in addition to the food they intake.  It is better to burn off calories that you take in than it is to not take in any calories at all.  Another important part of dieting is adequate sleep.  People need seven to eight hours of sleep every night to keep themselves healthy.  Lack of sleep can cause hormonal changes that make a person more hungry and decrease their ability to be full.  Before one takes on a diet, it is imperative that they consider these things.  Making a diet maintenance plan is suggested to help people keep track of the performance of these activities and to help them stay on task.  ("5 Things to Remember before You Start Dieting / Fitness / Weight Loss").
