Other Eating Disorders

By Max M. of PJMS

Binge eating is an eating disorder where the person consumes unhealthily large amounts of food. Almost everyone overeats sometimes, but people with binge-eating disorder overeat regularly, and often in secret. The person may want to stop, and promise to eat in more healthy proportions, but the urge to binge eat can overpower them and they continue to binge eat.

Orthorexia is when a person is obsessed with the “perfect diet.” This causes them to avoid foods with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives; pesticides; genetic modification; or unhealthy fat, sugar, or added salt.  This is similar to healthy dieting, except the people with orthorexia are completely obsessed with food selection. Some people with orthorexia never even eat out, so they know exactly where their food came from and how it was prepared.
