U.S.A. Fast Food

by Emily and Mariea at SPLHS

Today, fast food is almost the biggest way of eating because it's cheap, fast, you can eat it on the go, or wherever you are. The biggest fast food chains in order include: Subway restaurants, McDonald's, Starbucks, Pizza Hut, Burger king, Dunkin’ donuts, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell, and Domino’s Pizza. Even though you may not think about it, gas stations can also qualify as fast food because of all the items they have, all the junk food, canned food, candy, soda, energy drinks and all the other things gas stations have to offer. Sometimes, people don't realize how bad fast food is for you; you would have to walk seven hours straight to burn off a super sized coke, fry, and big Mac!

There are very unhealthy foods in fast food: the Pizza Hut Triple Meat Italiano, Taco Bell XL Grilled Stuft Beef Burrito, KFC Chicken Pot Pie, McDonald's Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon, Sonic SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger, Wendy's Triple, Subway Footlong Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, Wendy's Baconator Double, Burger King Triple Whopper with Cheese. Only seven items on McDonald's entire menu contain no sugar (French fries, hash browns, chicken nuggets, sausage, diet coke, coffee & iced tea do not contain).

Eating too much fast food and not doing anything to work it off is super bad for you! Not only can it cause obesity, it can also lead to a whole other strand of problems such as Hypertension: a term to describe high blood pressure, Coronary Heart Disease: is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries to your heart; CHD is also the leading death cause of men and woman in America. Some other problems include: Adult Onset Diabetes, stroke, Gallbladder disease, Osteoarthritis (most common joint disorder), Sleep Apnea (temporary cessation of breathing that occurs in sleep), respiratory problems, Endometrial cancer, Breast, Prostate and Colon Cancers, Dyslipidemia (abnormal amount of lipids), Steatohepatitis, Asthma, Hyperuricaemia, reproductive hormone abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, impaired fertility, lower back pain, and many other things that aren’t beneficial to the human body (“Weight Loss: Health Risks Associated With Obesity”).

When having any kind of restaurant, there are government regulations. With fast food, you can not serve food that has been prepared in a person’s house. Food must be sourced from approved food processing plants. Every food has a certain temperature it. Has to be stored in and must be cooked at a certain temperature. Employees must wash hands before cooking or preparing food so the establishment must provide hot water, soap, and hygienic stuff. Ice in establishments are used to keep stuff cold and to be served with drinks, ice that has been used to keep food cold must not be used in drinks (Drew).
