History of Dieting

By Maria C. of PJMS

When people think of diets, they usually think of it’s a way to lose weight or a way to help athletes form muscle; however, that is not always true. Dr. Beth Gruber points out, “that it could be a way to gain weight too or keep the weight you already have.” Throughout history, diets have changed very much. In Dr. Gruber’s article “The History of Diets and Dieting”, he said the first possible recorded diet was King William. He was the king of England in 1087. His diet consisted of (only) liquor. He was trying to lose weight to get back on his horse. He eventually did get back on his horse, but died that same year. Dr. Beth Gruber wrote that near 915 years after his death, many theories and plans about diets were made. Today, diets are healthier, and the only consist of eating healthy foods and getting the right amount of food from each food group.

Dieting really began near the 14th century, and became more common/popular in the 19th century. In 1980-1990 was when dieting gained popularity. Ali Luke, who wrote the article “When Did Dieting Being?” said, “Before 19th Century dieting meant something akin to fasting”. The word diet comes from the Greek word diatia. The first popular diet was called the Banting diet. It was named after a man called William Banting. Ali Luke stated that the plan for William’s diet was based on what his doctor recommended for him.  He was overweight and that was not permitted in the upper class so he tried to lose weight by going on a diet. The Banting diet consists of eating four meals each day: Food with protein, greens, fruit, and dry wine. When a person was on the Banting diet, starch and sugar was not allowed to be eaten; however, meat, butter, and milk were. Rev. Graham made the first diet food. He invented the graham cracker! The graham cracker was made of unsifted flour. He believed it was better than white bread.

It is amazing to think that as far back as 1087 people were eager to loose wait.  The scary thing is that they did not know how to do it safely.  As diets continue to evolve it is important that dieters stay educated.  Check up with Doctors will make a big difference and ensure everyone’s safety.
